South Tyneside Council , whom South Shields is part of, is run for and on behalf of the the South Tyneside Community.

Elected representatives from each Ward within the council  oversee the running of the borough.  Councillors or elected members as they are sometime referred to represent the community on our behalf.

Although they receive a members allowance for the work they do, they do not receive a salary or wage. Many already hold full time jobs elsewhere and do this in there free time.

Councillors make decisions  generally after consulting the community and then discussing it through a formal committee.

Employees of the council give advice and recommendations to the councillors and they also implement the decisions that councillors make on behalf of the community.
