Approaching the town centre along Westoe Road the number of grand old buildings are numerous. Here below are but a few where, at a later date I hope to index them. If you recognise any and are aware of the buildings history please let us know so we can put it on the site.
In the stonework at the top of the building front facia is "Equitable", the date of 1891 followed below with Co-operative Society. The building is currently ran as The Cooperative funeralcare (2009).

Taken on 24th June 2009 at around 6am which explains the lack of pedestrians. However, if you look up King Street you can see the Lorries and Vans unloading goods to the shops in this pedestrianised area.

Opposite Barclays on King Street is this wonderful building. Walk along the side (Mile End Road) and look at the back of the building which is still very much original.

Closely linked to South Shields is Jarrow and Hebburn where many of the local community worked in the shipyards.
