The re-development of this former South Shields Mechanics Institute was completed in February 2004 at a cost of £1.4 million However, the original building cost £2700 in 1859 but by 1870 , due to escalating costs the building was taken over by the Borough Corporation becoming the towns first public library opening in 1873.
The foundation stone of this magnificent building was laid by Sir Robert Ingham who was the M.P. for South Shields and also the President of the local Mechanics Institution.
In 1876 the Building also housed the Roman artefacts that were being excavated from the Lawe Top thus taking on a second use as a museum.
Not until 1976, when the Library moved into its new premises in Prince George Square did the building become the Museum and Art Gallery having gradually taken over the whole building.
